On Thursday, August 30th, Legacy Christian began Simley Volleyball’s home opener like lambs, but by the third set Legacy was playing like their namesake Lions. Simley captured its home opener in four sets 25-10, 25-16, 23-25, & 25-15. After narrowly winning the third set, Legacy Christian continued its push leading 6-1 before an insightfully called time-out refocused the Spartans who rattled off 24 of the final 30 points of the match behind the relentless middle attacks of Senior Adara Kellogg and Junior Tete Danso. The outside hitting trio of Juniors Sydney Stensgard, Ravyn Miles, and Emma Heimerl put the Lions in a deep hole in the match with 17 of their combined 22 kills in the first two sets of the match. Although Legacy scrappily rallied, after a few moments when the the Spartans lost direction, they remembered they were at home and the better team, turned the ship around, and sailed home with a strong finish in front of their adoring, yet strangely quiet fans. The “Nuggets” (Simley’s vertically challenged defensive quartet of Senior Sydney Brady, Sophomores Brynn Rogers & Molly Stein, and Freshman Bella Studer) continued their steady defense frustrating the Lion’s hitters giving no easy points. Juniors Jackie Stickler & Ellie Lanik contributed well, while Junior Abby Hepper continued to amass kills, and Senior Rachel Wanger tossed in 2 aces, 4 kills, and 36 assists. A solid home opener for the Spartans who open the Metro East season at home next Thursday against the always strong Tartan Titans.
