The Convent of the Visitation was a swinging place on Saturday, September 8th, as the Simley Girls Volleyball team brought their high-powered offense to the annual invitational there. The start of the tournament saw the Spartans dominate a solid Minnehaha Academy squad and give fleeting hope to long travelling Zimmerman as Simley raced into the top playoff pool to face 10th ranked AA Holy Angels and a very strong Hill-Murray. The tournament format forced the Spartans to play two matches and six sets in a row and pushed both Holy Angels and Hill-Murray to the max, dropping both matches 15-12 in the deciding sets, as Simley continued to improve its overall game and played its best volleyball of the season. The tourney was a coming out party for Junior Tiwaah Danso, who recorded an outstanding .542 kill percentage for the day. Senior Adara Kellogg (.441) and Juniors Emma Heimerl (.486) and Ravyn Miles (.443) swung for the fences all tournament long. Simley controlled the opponents’ offense as well netting 33 blocks for the day, with Junior Jackie Stickler contributing four on her own. Senior Setter Rachel Wanger dished out 71 assists. A fun week lays ahead as Simley plays a rare Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday schedule versus South St. Paul (for the “Shovel”), Minneapolis South (Parents Night), and a rematch with Hill-Murray (at Hill-Murray). Or as one player excitedly put it, “The matches will be fun, but with three in a row, we get Friday practice off!”
