The Simley Girls Volleyball team knew that its match at undefeated North High on Wednesday, October 10th would be an uphill climb, but each player embraced the challenge and played her hearts out. In the end, the Polars were a few points too tough this night. The Spartans lost in three sets that saw visiting Simley get tantalizingly close to pulling out both of the first two sets. A ball or two in near the end each set would have changed the outcome completely, but North showed why they have not lost in the Metro East (22-1 overall). North had to throw their entire arsenal at the gritty Spartans who would not go away easily. Even after the Polars scored ten unanswered points in the third set, Simley reached down to battle back with a scoring run of their own before North closed out the match. Although the outcome was disappointing, the match featured tremendously exciting and high-level play on both sides of the net. Both teams’ offenses were strong; it was highly competitive at the net, and while each sides’ back rows were put under stress from consistently strong attacks, the defenses stood strong to make for many long points. Both teams had earned the right to play for the conference championship and while at the end of the match North had earned the title, the Spartans had earned the respect of everyone in the gym.
