The Simley Girls Volleyball team did not have to dig too deep to retain “The Shovel” in its annual traveling trophy game with South St. Paul. The Spartans retained the Shovel with a comfortable win 25-10, 25-3!!!, 25-14 victory. All parts of the game were on full display as the team continued its solid early season play with all 13 players making the hole deeper for SSP on seemingly every point. Highlights included Sophomore setter Abby Hepper dishing out 11 assists in a single game and Freshman defensive specialist Bella Studer contributing four aces and five digs in a match that featured more pinpoint free ball passing than it required strong defense. Offensive highlights found Juniors Ellie Lanik and Jackie Stickler (also blocking well) hitting .500 and .400 from the outside and middle respectively. Junior Sydney Stensgard was solid on offense and defense, while the back-row play of the Nuggets (Senior Sydney Brady, Sophomores Brynn Rogers and Molly Stein, and Studer) continued to dig and pass at a high level, with an amazing 24 digs in 25 attempts. In fact, the entire team made only two digging errors for the match. The Spartans look forward to repeating their win in the conference match at SSP in the next few weeks.
