The very ably driven ISD 199 team transport was not the only bus to show up at Hastings HS on the evening of August 28th as the Simley Spartans Volleyball season opened on the road. The “Battle for the Bus” traveling trophy was also on board. A scrappy Raiders squad was no match for the relentless offensive fire power and stingy defense on the part of the Spartans who retained the Bus with a three-set sweep: 25-23, 25-21, 25-19. Set 1 saw Simley generally in control, but Hastings would not go away and the Spartans were pushed to the limit until Bella Studer put the game away with an ace on set point. Set 2 found Hastings in the lead for much of the way until a late set surge saw the Spartans roar past the Raiders for a gutsy win behind Junior Jackie Stickler’s and Sophomore Abby Hepper’s clutch block and kill respectively to close out the set. Set 3 was beautifully played by the Spartans highlighted by Sophomore Molly Stein serving 12 of the 25 points. Seniors Sydney Brady (13 digs), Adara Kellogg (7 kills & 6 aces), and Rachel Wanger (22 assists) provided great senior leadership, while the Junior offensive juggernaut of TeTe Danso, Emma Heimerl, Ravyn Miles, and Sydney Stensgard blasted 18 kills, and Sophomore Brynn Rogers was perfect on serve receive. The Spartans open their home season on Thursday, August 30th against Legacy Christian.
