Simley’s volleyball team opened its Metro East Conference schedule with a boom and a bang and a fizzle and a slam on Tuesday, September 6th, with a four-set victory over Tartan. As has been the case all season, no one player dominated the match, it was another great team effort. The Spartans determined the outcome on almost every point in the first set, not always in our favor, but led steadily to put the Titans away 25-22. The second set was the most thrilling of the match and found Simley in control most of the way, although the Spartans, not wanting the excitement to end, decided to miss a bevy of serves to keep Tartan in the set. The thrills never ended as Tartan served for the set at 24-23 until denied by a huge double block of the Titans best hitter, leading to a 27-25 overtime win for the Spartans. Simley lost a bit of interest in the third set as the Titans battled to keep the match alive with a comfortable 25-19 win. But the Spartans said enough was enough in the final set of the night and even though an early lead faded, Simley dominated in crunch time and slammed the door on Tartan 25-18. The Spartan’s victories are typically led by solid serve receive (2.26 by the Nuggets), pin point setting (41 assists), effective offense (50 kills), and stingy defense (47 digs) all of which were in evidence again. But an undeniable factor in Simley remaining undefeated was the thunderous student fan section, one of the best in Spartan volleyball history. As match point hit the floor with a resulting roar of approval from the stands, the fans rushed the court to join the team in a rousing rendition of the school song, leading even a Tartan coach to remark, “Now that is cool!” Indeed it was.
