The Minnesota State High School League hosted the AAA State Golf Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids. The Spartan girls golf team made their first appearance in the tournament in school history and, just like they have done all season, they came to play. The first round greeted the players with on-and-off rain and the Spartans responded with more record setting play as they set a new mark for the lowest team score in school history. Senior Captain Molly Illetschko started the team off with solid play on the fairways and greens, while Junior Anna Ahern played a steady round to end with her second-best score of the season. Senior Captain Rachael Wolfe kept her score in the 80’s for her 3rd straight round while teammates Jordan Juers, Reese McCauley, and Isabella McCauley all ended with their best rounds as Spartans to put the team in 4th place. Juers improved her career best score by 5 strokes, Reese McCauley ended with an impressive birdie on the 18th hole and an incredible 73, while Isabella McCauley played a bogie free round in complete control of her game on the way to a 5-under 67 and a 3-stroke lead as an individual. The team score of 321 delighted the Spartan supporters, who showed up in great numbers, and set stage for the second day of the tournament.
Day two came with no rain, but a strong northwest wind that brought a new challenge to the field. The Spartans once again took the challenge in stride and played the game like the champions they are. Senior Captain Molly Illetschko backed-up her great play on day one with another solid round despite the challenging conditions. Juniors Anna Ahern and Jordan Juers kept the ball in play and the scores low on their way to matching scores on day two. Senior Captain Rachael Wolfe overcame more than a few tough breaks by making some impressive recovery shots, including a chip-in par save on the 16th hole of the day. Seventh Grader Reese McCauley continued her great play, hitting fairway after fairway off the tee and carding one par after another on her way to an amazing 75. Her two-day total of 148 (4 over) put her team in a great spot, and earned her the 5th place medal and a spot on the podium. Freshman Isabella McCauley once again led the way for the team with a round just as impressive as her first. Bella poured in 5 birdies, four of those coming on the back nine, on her way to a four-under round of 68 and a two-day total of 135 (9 under par). The team score of 334 was the second best of the season, and the timing could not have been better. The remarkable play by the Spartan linksters allowed them to move ahead of powerhouse Roseville by one stroke, and to claim the third-place trophy at the AAA State Golf Tournament. Go Spartans!
