In golf it is often said that “it is better to be lucky than good.” On Wednesday, Simley was both. Oak Glen Golf Club witnessed some of the most unexplainable shots ever taken by a Simley golf team, backed up by some of the best ball striking of the season. A perfect tee shot on the first hole by Junior Molly Illetschko seemed to indicate that it would be a normal day for the team, but the fun didn’t begin until the par three third hole. It started with a miraculous up and down from behind the green on the third hole by eighth grader Isabella McCauley, who used that momentum to carry herself to first place and a 2 under 34. In the next group, Senior Kylie Seeling had a seeing-eye birdie put hit the breaks just one roll shy of the cup, followed by a drive into the trees on the fourth hole that somehow (some claim monkeys were seen) wound up in perfect position in the middle of the fairway. Senior captain Britta Iverson hit a ball into the water by the fourth green that appeared to completely submerge before being thrown out by a fresh water mermaid, and Junior captain Rachael Wolfe seemingly got help from a clam (or perhaps rock) that guided her ball safely away from the water on the same hole securing her third place finish. One can only wonder what else could have happened, but we will never know because Senior Abby Stein decided to keep her ball in the fairway on her way to a tie for fourth on the day. Simley hosts Hill Murray tomorrow at Inver Wood.
