Bunker Hills golf course in Coon Rapids hosted the 2019 section 3AAA high school golf tournament on Friday May 31st, and Monday June 3rd. The Simley girls golf team got off to a great start on the first day of the tournament with one of their best team scores of the year. Their great play on Friday not only allowed them to advance to the section finals on Monday as a team, but had them sleeping all weekend on a narrow lead over section powerhouses Woodbury and Rosemount. The team embraced the pressure of the lead, and turned it into a true gem in the section final. With history on the line, the Spartans turned in the best team score of the season. Senior Captain Molly Illetschko led the way with a no quit attitude that set the tone for her team. Junior Jordan Juers played brilliant off the tee the entire round to keep the Spartans in perfect position. Junior Anna Ahern kept the Spartans in position with great recovery shots and steady scores. Senior Captain Rachael Wolfe had a tournament to remember. Wolfe fired her best round of the year on Friday, only to better her score by two strokes with her great play on Monday. Seventh grader Reese McCauley was as cool as the other side of the pillow as she made her way around the difficult Bunker Hills course. Reese followed the lead of her captain Rachael Wolfe, and improved her score by two strokes on Monday to finish the tournament in a tie for fourth place individually. Freshman Isabella McCauley continued her dominant play in section 3AAA. Bella became the section medalist for the 3rd straight season, ending the tournament with an exclamation point as she birdied the 18th hole on her way to a two-day score of 142 (-2). The Spartan team ended the day with a score of 340, and a permanent place in the Simley record books. When captains Rachael Wolfe, Molly Illetschko, and Lauren Henninger raised the trophy with their teammates, they became the first team in Simley history to win the section golf tournament, as well as the first to qualify for the State Golf Tournament. What a season!
