Simley High School 3rd 0

The Simley Boys Golf Team travelled to Keller Golf Course for the Metro East Conference Championships on Wednesday, May 23rd. The Spartans had two goals. One, beat Hastings badly enough to finish the season in 2nd place (a difficult task considering Hastings boasts the individual conference champion). And two, play well enough to hold off late charging Mahtomedi and Hill-Murray. The team turned in a solid 318 stroke performance, enough to stay well ahead of its pursuers and lock down 3rd place in the Metro East, but fell short of moving past Hastings. The weather was great and saw numerous great shots, but the greens were treacherous and led to too many putts. Youth led the way with Freshman Zach Painter firing a team best 76 (4 over par) with Senior Jamie Warrick close behind with a claw-back 79 after opening with a tough first hole. Younger still 8th Grader Josh Painter carded a smooth 80 while splitting the fairways off the tee and Junior Ben Borchard rounded out the scoring with 83 with majority of good holes, but just a few big numbers. The last event of the conference season was also the venue where season-long conference honors were handed out. The Spartans struck big with Jamie Warrick (by virtue of a 15-foot snake on the final hole which agonizingly hung on the lip before falling in) and Zach Painter capturing All-Conference while Seniors Evan Schultz and James Royce and Junior Ben Borchard took home All-Conference Honorable Mention. Action next moves to the Schueller Cup where the Captains’ team is far-over matched by the Coaches team.
