What is Trap Shooting?

Athletes shoot at clay pigeons thrown from a trap house which is 16 yards in front of the shooters.  Athletes take five shots from five different stations.

What type of firearm is used with Trap?

Trap is used with a shotgun; the two gauges used in the league are 12 or 20 gauge.  Any type of shotgun(single shot, pump; over/under;side by side or semi-automatic) can be used as long the firearm is in good working condition.

What are the requirements to be on the trap team?

Any 7th-12th grade boy or girl may join the team.  

The athlete must have their Firearms Safety Certificate completed before the season starts.

What equipment is needed to shoot trap?

The athlete must provide their own shotgun; which must be in good working condition.

The athlete must provide their own ear protection.

The athlete must provide their own eye protection.

Where can I can get my Firearms Safety Certificate?

Check the MNDNR website on how to complete the Firearm certification.  This must be completed before the beginning of the trap season.

Does the trap team provide shotgun’s?

No, the athlete must provide their own shotgun; which must be in good working condition.  If you don’t have one; check with grandparents; other relatives or family friends to see if they have one which could be used.

How long is the season?

The season typically starts in early April and runs through Mid-June.  Athletes shoots once a week for their score.
