The Simley wrestling team won the Class AA State Championship on Thursday, February 27. The Team defeated South St Paul in the quarterfinals 64-11. I the semi-finals Simley defeated Detroit Lakes 55-14. The finals matched Simley against Fairmont County West. Simley defeated the Red Bulls 48-10. Simley finished the year 22-0. Simley won the 32 team Cliff Keen Invitational in Iowa. Simley won the Minnesota Christmas Tournament that showcased 32 teams as well as the AAA state champs Shakopee and the state AAA runner up Stillwater. Simley won the Cheesehead also a 32 team tournament in Wisconson. The team finished ranked #18 in the nation. It was a perfect season for the Spartans.
In the individual tournament the Spartans placed nine of eleven qualified wrestlers at state. Nolan Wanzek and Travis Dohmen both qualified for the state tournament. Simley 106lbs wrestler Cash Raymond placed second as just in 8th grader in his first state tournament. Junior Reid Nelson placed third at 113lbs. Sophomore Chase DeBlaere won his second state title at 126lbs. At 138lbs junior Cael Berg won the championship for his first state title. At 145lbs Ryan Sokol dominated the weight with all falls winning his second state title. 9th Grader Gavin Nelson finished second at 170lbs. Junior Quayin Short finished second at 182lbs. Sophomore Landan DuVal placed 6th at 195lbs. Bennett Tabor won his first state championship at 220LBS.
