Wearing brand new uniforms, the Simley Cross Country teams competed in their first official competition of the season at the Packer Invite, hosted by Austin High School. The relatively flat course was evened out by the 20-plus mph winds. Kicking off the meet was the coed 4K. Captain Zach Sayner moved swiftly through the field to finish in 3rd place. On the girls side, Captain Brekken Grathen worked side by side with teammate Crystal Bonilla Rios, pulling away during the 2nd half of the race. They would finish first and second, with teammate Julia Myers in 3rd.
In the boys 5k, youngsters Nathan Schauer and Jacob Scheffer led the team with personal best times of 18:59 and 19:03. Newcomer Kaiden Schrandt finished his first 5k ever in 19:23, followed by Gabe Alvear and Alex Anaya. Anaya, and Griffin Wormer, ran personal bests from last year. The Spartans finished in 6th place with 172 points.
Finishing the day was the 1.5 mile race. 8th graders Hunter Aamot and Haden Vanella continued their rivalry, finishing in 6th and 7th respectively, just .1 second apart! 7th graded Sam Wegenknecht was 18th overall and 15th in team scoring. Abi Lindquist and Ana Alvear led on the girls side, finishing 5th and 6th on the girls side. Both teams finished 3rd out of the 4 teams.
The Spartans next race is in two weeks, on September 10th at the Metro East Conference Preview at St. Croix Bluffs in Hastings.
