Simley High School
A win is a win is a win. The Simley Girls Volleyball team played its annual traveling trophy match against rival South St. Paul for “The Shovel” on Monday, September 11th. The match started in expected fashion as the Spartans played extremely well on their home court using a dominating middle of the first set to seemingly establish the tone of the match winning comfortably. Simley continued its solid play through the middle of the second set when the night suddenly turned into a dogfight when the Packers staged a furious comeback to take the lead after the Spartans led 11-2. In fact, SSP led 21-19 before the the home team said enough is enough and reeled off the last six points of the set behind the strong serving and defense of Senior Abby Stein. In the third set, Simley again found itself trailing the scrappy Packers it was Senior Guresi Mena’s turn to serve six straight points near the end of the match to end the dream or nightmare depending on which side of the bleachers you were sitting. Senior Ashley Perrin opened the match with 9 straight kills and Sophomore Emma Heimerl hit an outstanding .637 with 7 kills in only 11 attempts to highlight the offense. Team defense also helped turn the match around as five different players made no digging errors. All in all, the night turned into a determined effort by a good team struggling at times yet overcoming and pulling through together at the end.
